I've been here quite a few times, and have consistently ordered the Smoked Salmon and Avocado Eggs Benedict. It is byfar, my favorite breakfast dish in Calgary. YUMMY INDEED!! Each and every time that I've had it, it has simply tasted amazing as the first time. From the right amount of hollandaise sauce (also not too strong), to the freshness of the avocado and salmon, it is just right for your morning appetite. It also comes with a side of really tasty crispy potatoes!
We also ordered the Banana Blueberry Pancakes to share. I found it good, but I wouldn't recommend this if you're eating a meal beforehand. It's way too filling, we both couldn't finish this after our main meal. It also felt like it was missing something, it was good but not that good. (Then again, I guess I prefer chocolate chips in my pancakes) They also give a small amount of fruits on the side, I love fruits so I thought there could be a little more fruits for the price you're paying.
The great thing about Blue Star Diner is everything they order in, they order from Local Farmers & Suppliers. I love seeing our local restaurants support our locals. They also try to keep everything they order as organic as they can, which is awesome.
Another thing I love about them is their service. They have such a great group of down to earth and friendly staff, it makes the atmosphere that much more comfortable and relaxing. They're attentive as well, if your cup of coffee or tea needs a refill, it is done without you having to ask. They often check up on their tables to ensure that their customers are happy with their experience. I know it sounds so simple, but that is something often forgotten at many restaurants nowadays, so it is always nice to point out when you do get the full service.
Their environment is very home-ish and cozy. Their style is very unique and simple You'll feel like you're eating breakfast at a friends, mothers, grandmothers etc. I liked it. The only thing is, if you're claustrophobic or like privacy, this place may not be enjoyable for you. Since it has a small space, many of the tables are placed not too far from the next table. You can basically talk to your neighbours or eavesdrop in on their conversation of you truly would like to. Otherwise, it is a great environment, everyone there (customers & staff) looks like they're having a great time, but I mean, who goes eating breakfast grumpy?
Last but not least (although I do find their menu pricey), they do have such a great variety of meals on their menu, you won't have a hard time deciding what meal is calling out your tummy.
Check it out, if you haven't! If you have, what would you recommend? Leave a comment!
